Amen to that! It’s bad enough watching the constant workplace abuse in dramas but at least I can overlook it because I tell myself it’s fiction. Course when you read those kinds of articles the reality is really tough to accept and it’s like they’re talking about another planet! No workplace is perfect of course but we have to count our lucky stars (I suppose) that whatever the problems – they are not acceptable when they are exposed to the light of day! It’s going to take awhile to change attitudes and workplace culture and we still need to get equality between the sexes when it comes to equal pay for equal work but goodness can you imagine being “abused” because you dare to get pregnant? Forced to work overtime because your boss doesn’t feel like going home? Forced to eat where and when you don’t want to? Even worse…forced to drink when you don’t want to…the list is long and very sad.

It’s a sad and vicious cycle that the abused turn out to be the abuser when they have a chance..someone needs to start making a different choice to change things..like the child of an alcoholic choosing never to drink for instance!!

  It reminds me of the excessive shift hours by hospital residents, 36 hours or so, but the next gen that comes to power wouldn’t change it because they endured it — “I suffered (and survived) so you should too!”

  It’s far different for example when parents have a hard life – ..especially immigrant parents…they do their best to make sure that their children have a BETTER life..sometimes they go overboard with that unfortunately but the idea is that they don’t want a repetition of their own suffering..they don’t want to inflict that on someone they love..one time when blood is definitely thicker than water? It’s so much easier to abuse your underlings if you don’t see them as real people I guess…

But if you think pregnancy abuse doesn’t happen here, have I got news for you! UNBELIEVABLE in this day and age and in this very country! But whenever you have people who need the money and have few options you’ll always find power-tripping bullies ready to take advantage. If people didn’t feel trapped, both in Korea and here, more people would tell their managers to fuck off and stand up for their rights and less of them would get away withe their bullshit. 😦

Reading that essay, I felt so bad for that employee, and part of me really wished he would have eyed the kimchi plate that landed in front of him and coolly ignored it and continued eating, forcing the boss to lose face if he made a scene. Of course the boss may have hit him in that country, lol. Here you could totally not get away with THAT at least.
