Chinese Gov’t Puts Restrictions on Palace Dramas, Men’s Earrings and Other Areas in C-Ent – DramaPanda

DramaPanda shared the news about the latest batch of Chinese governmental censuring on television programming, and certain types of historical dramas are now off the broadcast schedule* because, I dunno…, they’re fun to watch?

I’d seen examples of the earring ban come up recently on Twitter, but it all seemed a little (LOT) silly.

Yolette, Story of Yanxi Palace is one of these impacted by the ruling. Hopefully this will not impact the licensing arrangement with Viki.

  I doubt it. The drama has fully aired and is fully subbed on Viki. It’s not a still-in-progress drama. I think they may be referring to a reruns or on-demand viewings in China, because it finished its premiere run there months ago already. But it’s curious they would pull this drama because it has a very detectable modern-day-China propaganda line running through it, namely that making noise over an injustice is a worse crime than the actual injustice. Yes, that circular logic is very much at play under Xi Jinping. You’d think they’d appreciate a drama that drums that into the head of their sheeples.

    Hmm… I wonder if they’re referring to a new drama I saw a short (annoyed) review of on Avenue X’s YouTube channel; she felt it was almost a complete copy of the drama (down to the majority of main supporting actors). Either way, I think that the censorship is due to the crazy lack of understand of the real world and human nature on the part of the censors 😝 But I know what you mean about the Xi Jinping regime messages showing up more and more. (Great… just what we needed, right? As if bizarre product placement wasn’t enough!)

I don’t get it? What’s the point of the censorship? Does it not honor or truly depict Chinese history? And if it’s fantasy, what does it matter? Does everything they deem unfit fall under the government umbrella to censor? There’s a lot of XXXXXX rated stuff out there too…….or is that part of a hidden underground? If you ask me, somebody’s not getting paid enough——if you know what I mean…….

  These dramas don’t accurately portray history to the letter (certainly none that have time-travel aspects), just as the movie The Favourite plays a little fast and loose with history too. The only kind of historical drama that the censors approve of are those stodgy “ripped from the authenticated history books” kind, where the stories flatter current regimes and/or don’t cast aspersions on historical figures currently in esteem.
  
  The XXX-rated stuff is definitely out there, and so is the cracking down on them. If the government catches you, look out!
  
  As for the earrings and hair color censorship, they’re just trying to stop the “morals of the youth of China” from being corrupted by pop influences of Korean (and Taiwanese) stars. That horse is out of the barn, but they can control what shows up on broadcast and official channels. Good luck with it elsewhere.
