Finished “Story of Yanxi Palace”

Good stuff! Two thumbs up! I inhaled 70 episodes in less than 2 1/2 weeks! Though I found the last 10 episodes underwhelming, it was only because the previous 60 episodes were so outstanding.

Really the best part of this drama is our heroine. She is really too good to be true, probably because she is NOT cloyingly “good” and “forgiving.” Oh no.  She’s a woman on a mission, fearless, sly and often ruthless in pursuit of justice.  No goody-two-shoes here, just mettle and moral fiber. If our girl goes down, she will go down swinging! SO MUCH TO ADMIRE.

I also enjoy the fact that while she is said to be a beauty, she’s an unconventional one, gaunt, pale, sharp-featured with villainess eyebrows. Nothing soft about her. And I also LOVE that all the men who fall for her are primarily attracted by her spirit, and not necessarily her looks.

The plotting and writing are excellent. The characterizations are also three-dimensional; no one is 100 percent good or 100 percent bad, just flawed people clawing their way through the world making good and bad choices. So people you think are good can believably turn bad, and people you think are bad can also turn good. I love it! Kept me on my toes!

The pacing is also pretty good. Not a lot of time is wasted on trivialities. Even when you think a conversation has gone on too long, some part of it will be relevant in the future. It sure hooked me for all 70 eps.

I’m not going to say much else because I don’t want to rob future viewers of any of the suspense, but I certify that it’s a well-rendered treat!
