Looking at offerings on Netflix

This post was inspired by a Twitter conversation; the poster had just started Crash Landing On You (first k-drama experience) and no IRL friends were watching and able to dish. The next question was, what can I watch next?

The limitation is Netflix (for now), but I thought, let’s go through what’s on offer on the site and discuss what I think is a solid choice, and why… so let’s go!

From this batch, there are some clear winners and interesting choices, beginning with It’s Okay to Not Be Okay and Crash Landing On You. Both feature attractive leads (though with K-dramas, it’s safe to assume this will always/mostly be true), strong ensemble casts (ditto for this being a truism in K-dramas), and interesting and fresh stories. Okay touches thoughtfully on mental illness (a rarity in Asian topics) while the couple learns the truths behind their connection to each other. Crash flirts playfully with a NK/SK romantic entente and has fun too with life on the other side of the border. Boys Over Flowers is one to watch for its archetypal formula (hey, it’s been adapted at least 5 other times that I know of!) It’s not the best version (I prefer the Japanese and Taiwanese iterations), but it put Lee Min-ho on the map and its even more of a Cinderella tale than the cute Cinderella and Her Four Knights (which has an appealing ensemble of swains for the leading lady). Romance Is a Bonus Book isn’t perfect, but it’s a pleasure to have two leads with acting talent pine in a book-world setting.

If we’re going to talk about books, Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung is a contemporary twist on the historical genre, with a sassy, smart, career-minded heroine and a sensitive author prince. Strongest Deliveryman is a little guys against the big, with a likable cast and it makes for easy watching (unlike The Winter the Wind Blows with a charismatic cast wasted in an unpleasant story). Hospital Playlist is from the same team as the “Reply” dramas and offers up a smart, ‘you feel like you know these people’ ensemble storyline. There are others in this group worth a look, but later, okay?

This grouping features some titles that started really well but lost their way at the end; I have my eye on The Uncanny Counter because I read good things about it daily, but for my money, the winner in this group is Because This Is My First Life. The old ‘contract roommates’ trope is done right with this smart cast. I may also be one of the few who likes Cheese In The Trap, but the casting worked for me and I appreciated the difficulties of navigating university and love lives.

Oh My Ghost is a winner on 2 counts: not only does it feature one of my favorite leading men in a fun story, but one of my favorite actresses in a very amusing and touching turn as the virgin ghost in question. Kim Seul-gi makes every drama better. Hello My Twenties is a solid ensemble cast going through pretty normal romantic and not-so-romantic issues, but the young women who share the house get thru things together. Mr. Sunshine is not a sunshine-y story, but its setting in one of Korea’s troubled points in history and a top-notch cast make it work a look. Just a reminder: Korean dramas do not always believe in HEAs for everyone. Which leads me to the strongest title in this grouping: My Mister. When the cast was announced I was in a quandary: I adore the male lead and like the work the female lead has done, but I really, really did not want them in a romance. The good news is that this is a love story, in many ways, but not a conventional one where they are concerned. We’ve written a lot about this drama on this site (which is searchable), so I won’t go on too much about it, but suffice to say, this is deep, dark, complex, thoughtful, and lovely (not to mention at times heartbreaking).

When the Camellia Blooms is one of the few chances to enjoy the work of Gong Hyo-jin on Netflix, but she’s always won me over and this ‘found family’ drama is charming. I don’t know if it’s everyone’s cup of tea, but The School Nurse Files is an almost recommended one for its quirky but incomplete story. Save Me is Dark, so definitely not for all, but if you’re into stories of cult-like religion, try it!

Seriously, I don’t know why you haven’t watched Stranger (there are now 2 seasons) yet — what are you waiting for? This is complex, Korean politicking and corruption and murder mystery-ing at its finest, and lead actors Cho Seung-woo and Bae Doona are incomparable together. This is another I’ve written about in detail, so search here for more. I am also very fond of the history-driven, winning ensemble casts of the ‘Reply’ dramas: Reply 1994 and Reply 1988. The mixture of ‘who ends up with whom’ and the period details formula works in all 3 settings. (And btw, note the Xs on some of these non-K-dramas, some are even dreadful!)

Misaeng, this remains one of my favorite K-dramas of all time, for its perfect casting (Im Siwan and those Bambi eyes…) and the slice-of-life setting in the workaholic business world in Korea today (aka Hell Joseon). Much more info is available about it on this site. Also, I didn’t highlight Hymn Of Death because it’s on the war/bad things happen spectrum, but it is well done if you’re curious, and it’s short. [An aside, when searching for Korean dramas on Netflix you’ll see recommendations for other titles, often Chinese. I enjoyed the Love O2O drama and movie adaptations, even though I’m not into gaming.]

I hope you’re still reading, because there are some real winners in this grouping! Another Miss Oh has a couple with Chemistry in its leads, and it feels very contemporary in its telling of a couple who think they’re doomed because of misunderstandings. She’s also very good in (not pictured) Let’s Eat 2 (aka outstanding Korean food porn disguised as a romance, like the first Let’s Eat). Reply 1997 is the first of the ‘Reply’ series (in spite of the year) and is a fun start to the formula, touching on the early days of Korean music fandoms. Finally, don’t sleep on the writer-with-a-haunting problem in Chicago Typewriter with its excellent cast and a house all of us envy.

Some really good dramas are really great bromances and Prison Playbook is that (as is the yellow boxed Chinese drama The Untamed). An unconventional setting and an unforgettable cast are always a winning combination in my playbook. The other I’ll recommend is Dear My Friends for its focus on the difficulties of making life and love work and dealing with older relatives and friends as they age. This is a great introduction to some of the best mature actors in Korean television if you’re new(ish) to the genre. Every single actor in this drama has a long resume of great works.

That’s all for this post! There are many titles available that I did not discuss — some because it’s kinder to say nothing at all (and hey, some people may like them) and in some cases I’ve not yet seen them and/or they’re not my cup of tea. But there are so many choices that are very much worth your time — I hope that you have a lot of fun exploring them and discovering what tickles your fancy!

Dramas and Choices in these strange times

Hello everyone; yes, I’m still here! But I confess to being all over the place when it comes to choosing the things to do, whether it’s things I should be doing, or want to be doing (or even can do) — in other words, pretty much like everyone else! This has resulted in me suffering from a rash of completion issues, to the detriment of posting and updating posts on this site. I definitely need to have someone take a chancla to me (perhaps).

What have I been doing? Well, I was still obsessed with Joy of Life, so much so that I found the source webnovel and inhaled all 746 chapters (which I figure has to be equivalent to about 3500 pages). It’s massive, yes, but I didn’t regret a single moment. I often found myself holding my breath as I was reading — is reading apnea a thing? It just might be! I particularly enjoyed comparing how the novel was adapted to the small screen — a long, spoilery post will follow for those who have not seen the series (and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?) — and contemplating how they will adapt the balance of the novel.

This led me to reading a totally OTT BL webnovel (smut galore) that too was over 700 chapters! I might add that The Untamed still won’t let me go, so let’s just add in the source novel as well as pages and pages of fanfics for that. Not gonna lie, I’m more than a little obsessed with that series and its cast. (cough* Xiao Zhan), so sue me, I have eyes, don’t I? I even watched Xiao Zhan’s scenes in the forgettable and cheesy Oh! My Emperor (just because), his movie Jade Dynasty, and I’ll probably watch Fights Break Sphere too (bonus: little Fei Liu from Nirvana In Fire, Leo Wu is the lead).

I am watching dramas too, but haven’t been motivated to write about them, and that’s no reflection on their quality because if I’m finishing them and enjoying them, particularly XX, aka Dear My Ex, a short, 5-episode gem available on Kocowa (maybe Viki too). How can you not love a drama featuring a cocktail maker who names a drink “Adios, bitch” for her frenemy? I’m starting a lot of dramas and liking them, which means that hopefully I will finish them. I like Tale of Nokdu and My Roommate Is a Detective, so far, but nothing is making me lose sleep over them the way that reading those novels has. There are some dramas, like the Taiwanese short (13 episodes) time-travel(ish) Some Day Or One Day and the Chinese murder mystery Day and Night that I’m watching that fit this slow-watching mood; they are mood pieces or too gritty for big doses.

I am hopeful that a crop of new dramas will scratch that itch, but I’d like them to get a little closer to being completely finished on air, namely Hyena, Hospital Playlist, Rugal, I’ll Come to You when the Weather Is Nice, and so on — and let’s not forget Lee Min-ho’s new one coming up!

Which brings me to Crash Landing On You. I’m on “stalled” right now and I’m not exactly sure why. I like it well enough, plot-wise. I find Hyun Bin as ever easy on the eyes. But it’s just not what I’m pressing “play” on at the moment. I have 3 other in-progress dramas that I was watching when all the news starting getting grimmer and grimmer and I’ve yet to return to any of them. It’s like they’re infected somehow too and I’ve put them into a viewing quarantine. I plan to finish them, but time will tell.

Let’s hope we all have the chance to finish the things we want to do, and spend our days doing things that are meaningful and that bring us comfort. Take very good care of yourself and your loved ones, my friends, and here’s hoping that things improve soon!

Crash Landing – jump to the Finale – final thoughts

Well..that was well worth it for sure! When I finish a drama with a smile on  my face that’s a definite winner.

I know that most kdramas are about love..romantic love and everything else is sometimes just “filler” but that’s what I loved about this drama. It was definitely about romantic love (and a really special one at that) but just as importantly it was about other kinds of love as well. Those ducklings stole my heart..they loved each other..they loved their captain..they fell in love with that strange lady from the south and every action showed it.Sure..they didn’t convince me for a moment that they were really genuine hard-nosed soldiers but that was definitely beside the point.

And then there were the female ducklings..every bit as wonderful (though not as cute)..I didn’t expect them to capture my heart at all..at the beginning their roles were not quite even and I didn’t enjoy the sucking up but somewhere along the line they became equal..they supported each other..they defended each other..they really loved each other and they too fell in love with the crazy lady from the south..

But that’s not all..I also came to love Dan’s mom..it seemed like she’d be just another overly ambitious mom pushing her daughter towards a good marriage but in the end we see that she’s just a mom who loves her daughter and worries about her and is willing to let her do was SHE wants to do..awesome.

The only mom who didn’t convince me was our stepmom..I don’t think she was well written..and her conversion to a loving, supportive mom didn’t really do it for me..why did she reject her in the first place? I must have missed that part..

All along I think most of us were trying to imagine how they could achieve a happy ending that would be satisfying..well it was really bittersweet I thought..I love that they both remain forever connected and that they  are able to see each other in their Switzerland paradise but really both of them have their lives on hold..they are “alone” for the other 11.5 months of the year..and because they cannot communicate the day will come when one of them won’t show and that will be a terrible day indeed..

Crash Landing on You – Episode 14

A couple in love can be in a world of their own..and our couple prove it over and over and over again..so sweet..and I love how he took ownership of her safety and put on his bodyguard hat..and wasn’t it a blast to see those pests as they tried to fire him..lol?

Manbok strikes again..how ingenious of him to put that mic under her bed..people feel so free to speak their minds when a comatose patient is in bed don’t they?

Our conman is certainly turning on the charm and she’s not resisting. These two are so good for each other..each one drawing those hidden qualities from within. Its kind of sad to think that she’s practically wasted 10 years having an unrequited crush on a man who doesn’t spare her a thought while right beside her she’s got someone who truly sees her for what she is and isn’t afraid to tell her so..unfortunately he’s got lots of baggage that can’t be ignored.

Crash Landing on You – Episode 13

ok..so I ended this episode shouting..”CALL 911..she’s bleeding to death!!!”. I know..I know..it was for effect but I couldn’t enjoy it cause I wanted them to hurry..lol!

Could we be more relieved that Manbok didn’t go back to old habits and actually TOLD about the threat he was under?? That was a nice little manipulation there..I was ready to fall for it while disappointedly shaking my head..so good for him! Also love it that Seri was able to do her part..even more than she expected to do! Shall we hope that her recovery is as miraculous as that of her lover?? If memory serves, he was out taking a dozen goons down the day after surgery….fingers crossed!

Crash Landing on You – Episode 12

Yolette’s comments appended below.

Great episode! First of all..I really love the way Seri is using her money. She’s not just a rich empty headed woman..she’s someone who has worked real hard to get where she is but now..obviously after her time in Korea..she is doubly aware..not only of  the power of status and money..she already knew that but of the good it can be used for. We don’t know enough about her previous life but I”m guessing she is a changed woman who wouldn’t relate to the girl she was previously. So..smart girl that she is..I loved it when she went to see those goons and promised them free rent if they worked for her..awesome!

And..all I’m going to say is..Tomato Cultivator..I’m going to use that phrase from now on..I loved it so much..so cute the way they introduced the music from his previous fiasco of a drama too..and earlier on we got to see snippets of Chuno too…

But..of course..the highlight of this episode was the Duckling Reunion with Mom and Dad..wasn’t that the most precious thing in the world..just so heart melting that it just brings a smile to your lips..

I have to say that I really felt for our girl though..walking into an empty home when you never expect to see a loved one again is one of the hardest thing we can ever do and she had not reason to think that they hadn’t left..heavens..they’ve said enough goodbyes to last a life time!

Also reminds me that I really don’t like surprise parties..I will never forget one that we planned many years ago for my mom..everyone pretending to forget so that the surprise would be even better..but what we didn’t think about was the miserable long birthday she had during which she felt abandoned and forgotten..and that surprise party at night did NOT make up for a terrible day.

Crash Landing on You Ep 11 comment

This site is refusing to let me reply-to-post. it says I need to log in. I’m ALREADY logged in. Then when i try to do it it says someone already has my log-on. Yes, that’s ME, bitch. Dafuq.

Anyway…

It was pretty fun seeing our Hyunnie get the “Pretty Woman” treatment, this time with our wildly wealthy heroine flexing her plastic. HOW MANY times have we seen this scenario play out where it’s the poor, unfashionable girl who has to trot out in various outfits for the stoic (but inwardly squealing) man to choose. It was so refreshing! And I love that she bought him one of everything though he might only be in the country for a few more hours and he had warned her so. It brought her so much happiness to shop for him and take care of him.

And he was adorable reading the comments on his video online, too! He’s so easily pleased by compliments hahaha. You would think he’s be used to it by now. The women in North Korea ALSO have eyes, come on.

I have to say, though, that considering Capt. Ri dug through a tunnel for 20 HOURS to get to the South because Se Ri’s life was in danger, how did he leave her side so abruptly without even making alternative arrangements for her protection?? There’s no way Se Ri should be walking around in an empty building and parking garage by herself! She has a security staff, for God’s sake. They couldn’t have assigned one to shadow her? I mean even if it turned out to be useless because our villain had already infiltrated, at least it would show the intention to safeguard her was paramount.

But I have to say this villain perplexes me. He has escaped to the South, where he apparently has extensive connections (given the number of goons who attacked Capt Ri on his behalf) or plenty of money to hire them, yet his only purpose in life appears to be to kill our girl who has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to him!! All this in a bid to get “revenge” on Capt. Ri, a man whose brother he killed FIRST. His motivation is so “how DARE you duck when I throw things at you!” that I have to roll my eyes. Was Captain Ri such a nemesis that he needs to be made to suffer in perpetuity? Isn’t he ALREADY grieving the undeserved loss of his hyung?? Does this villain have no thoughts of just living large (and peacefully) on his ill-gotten gains in freedom and BB-Q Olive Chicken houses? I hope we get some more insight into why he is so deranged and hateful. He makes no sense at all.

Yeah, the ducklings are useless. But we knew they would be. Even Captain Ri’s plan of wandering around until he bumped into her was better than theirs. Hahaha!

It was fun to see Con Man suddenly start to catch feelings for Dan; he was cute. Though I still can’t stand him.

Oh and let’s all thank KitKat for their sponsorship of this episode. Eat a pile of them when you are sad, kids!

Crash Landing on You – Episode 11

You’d think our smart heroine would have a bit more judgement..I mean..she had proof that people she mistrusted have entered her home while she’s gone..so what’s the first thing she should have done?? Change that code for heaven’s sake! It’s not much use doing it now..though it won’t hurt. What was she thinking?

And…finally..a makeover for our guy..because it’s Binnie I endured his Mr. Spock visuals but when I saw the new look I realize how much I’d been suffering all along..hated that hair! He looks so much more handsome and really much younger now don’t you think?? No wonder the saleslady was drooling all over him..lol..he must have presented a lovely sight up close.

The ducklings are cute but they can’t keep wandering all over the place with no purpose..what is their plan? Methinks that they don’t have one and probably at the end of the day it will be they who will need saving and not the other way around. They are definitely running out of money..

I’m loving Dan and Con Man..it’s so nice to see him so insecure ..so unsure of himself..like a breath of fresh air and really he and our heroine are mirror images of each other in a way. Both came in as somewhat flawed individuals who are being changed by the two North Koreans..conveniently so..but I don’t care..I’m a sucker for happy endings and keeping my fingers crossed that we get it. Would it be too much to expect that everyone will live happily ever after..probably yes…

Considering our girl came back from the dead in this episode, I gotta say the hour for the most part was pretty dull for me.

Crash Landing on You – Episode 9

My little heart can’t take all those sweet moments..and I’m not only speaking about our couple..I loved the moments with his parents too..loved how his mom put his happiness above all else..loved how she is so not typical of the usual tigress rich mother..loved how the father was sooo out of his depth when he was staring love in the face..I mean..honestly..how can any parent not love it when their child is so obviously loved by another?

I do feel badly for Dan though..not think she’s right in forcing this relationship along..(what relationship??) but because she’s obviously so hurt..and it’s not just hurt pride..knowing that she liked him so many years ago and has kept those feelings and nurtured them along…realizing that he was nice to everyone and didn’t even remember her when they met in Switzerland..having her expectations dashed at what she thought would be a future with him..I just feel for the girl. At first I thought that her reaction was a bit much since it was an arranged marriage and they hadn’t seen each other in 7 years but knowing about her one-sided crush gives us a wrinkle that I hadn’t counted on.
